The Importance of Health Insurance

Health insurance is basically any program that will provide assistance in paying for your healthcare. Without health insurance, costs for healthcare would be extremely high. The Affordable Care Act which is also known as Obamacare, has a main goal of providing health insurance options that cover medical, vision, dental, and other possible types of healthcare that they may not be able to afford on their own.

Usually when dealing with health coverage, you and your insurer each agree to pay either a percentage or a specific dollar amount. There are many different ways to get health insurance. Young people are allowed to stay on their family's insurance plan until they are 26 through the Affordable Care Act, you can get it through your job, governmental organizations such as Medicare and Medicaid, directly through a health insurance company, or through your state if it provides health insurance. There are many options, but there are many questions to ask yourself when trying to decide which plan to get.

If it is important to you, it is necessary to find out if you have the option to go to any doctor, pharmacy, and other health facility that you want. You should make sure that specialists are covered as well as special conditions. If there is an issue over a bill, you should find out how that is taken care of. There are many different things to take into consideration before choosing a plan.

Health insurance is very important to learn about and understand, especially as college students. We are at the point where we are growing up and having to take on certain responsibilities. Planning ahead and learning more about our future healthcare, will benefit us for when the time comes to make these serious decisions that will affect our futures.

  1. Wow, great post! I must say that you have mentioned something that I didn't have a clue about; I didn't know that we were allowed to stay on our families insurance plan until we're 26. I always thought we had to get off by the time we're 21. It's such a relief that I don't have to struggle to find an insurance plan for myself on my own. It would have been really hard for me, since I'm 20 now because I haven't even considered what insurance plan I want. Good thing I have more time to decide.

I heard that Obamacare made it to where high income families practically pays for the lower income family's health insurance. Is this true? I think it would be interesting to know the pros and cons of healthcare and how it can affect both high income and low income families. I suggest this just in case you have a hard time of picking a topic. I'm sure whoever reads this will find the information you found really helpful! There are so many college students, including myself, that don't really look far into depth of healthcare, so I really appreciate this post!

  2. Rachel,

First off, I honestly think that ObamaCare, AKA the Affordable Care Act was one of the best programs that we had. Although there were a few problematic areas, it covered a lot of people. Those with preexisting conditions were able to afford medications and screenings, everything that they needed. Those people cannot help the fact that they were born with this defect or conditions, so why should they have to pay a crazy amount of money to be covered? Most insurance companies look at those procedures and say "Welp, good luck with that." They don't want to pay it! And it's just a bummer that it's been repealed. We as young students aren't even able to stay on our parent's health insurance until we're 23 anymore. I hope things change for the better within our healthcare system.

  3. This was a very informative post for me. To my shame, I know very little about healthcare and health insurance. This post gave me a basic understanding on its purpose and how I would receive health insurance. I know that medical bills are outrageously expensive and almost any person would be unable to afford all of their expenses without health insurance. I would love to know more about how a person determines the best and most affordable healthcare for themselves. I know that access to healthcare is a huge issue for some. Many people may not know what insurance they actually have access to. If people are without insurance and assume that they cannot receive any medical treatment, they pose a greater risk for facing various health issues.

  4. I am happy I am staying on my family's care until I'm 26 because there is still so much I don't know about how health care. That is one thing I hope for with my future career: health insurance even if it isn't the best I want minimum coverage until I can get started and then I can find an insurer that will cover a little more even though it'll cost more. My dad was telling me about health care and he said it was a lot like playing the lottery. You pay for it and that way if something happens you will have a little coverage but if you don't have it, which I think is illegal, and something happens you would have been better off to just have health care. I don't know if you watch Friends but this reminds me of the episode where Rachel doesn't have health insurance. 'I definitely want that' but she doesn't have it and the shock is something that I think our generation is starting to realize.

  5. Hey Rachel, I didn't know that you could stay on your parents insurance until your 26. I think once I was 21 my mom said I was old enough to get my own insurance, and I was like wow mom your going to do me like that, but I'm fine with having my own insurance. This information is important though because it is impossible to be able to pay for anything medically right out of pocket, so insurance does come in handy. It's also important to find the right health insurance for yourself so you'll know it wouldn't cause too many problems for you. Thanks for letting us know this Rachel, what a great start for your blog!

  6. I'm glad I'm not 26 yet so I don't have to deal with all of that...very informative post. I had no idea how that all works so I'm glad you explained it. Even after reading I still don't fully understand because, I mean let's face it I never do. Hopefully by the time I'm 26 I do though. I agree with Morgan with what she said about how it's nearly impossible to pay health bills out of pocket. My birth control in my arm was over 2,000 dollars to put in but my insurance covered it all. Thank goodness! I think when I am old enough I might go with Blue Cross Blue Shield because they seem trustworthy.

  7. Very informational post Rachel. Health Insurance is very important and if it did not exist I am not sure what a lot of people would do, including myself. Anything regarding to your health can be very expensive and paying healthcare bills in full amount can be very stressful. A lot of people do not have that type of money. However I am still on my family health insurance because I am 21. I can leave their insurance and get my own though because I am grown. Like you said, it is important for us as college students to understand health insurance because we are growing up and have to take responsibility.

  8. Hey Rachel! This is a very educational post and I love it. It was very informative and helpful. I'm still on my mother health insurance, so I never knew anything about health insurance. Of course I heard of health insurance but I never knew the major details on how to get, what are my options, etc. You taught me about the major parts of that and I appreciate it. I am now a step closer to almost becoming a full adult. I know for a fact that it's important for everyone to have health insurance, but unfortunately not everyone can and that sucks. I personally think that there should be a way to make sure that everyone is able to have health insurance; I understand that medicare and medicaid are helpful, but even with those there are still people who do not have health insurance.

  9. I'm so happy your doing health insurance as your topic. For an English class I wrote a whole paper comparing the different kinds of health insurance. I currently think our health care system is OK and working but I'm personally for universal health care, but this country believes health insurance is a privilege apparently. Also, trumpcare is pretty similar to obamacare but in my opinion not as advanced and actually worse than obamacare and I'm not just saying that because of the party I consider myself. Besides that, I love that you chose this topic!
