What is going on with President Trump and healthcare?
President Trump on Healthcare
President Trump has been working very hard to try to
repeal Obamacare also known as the Affordable Care Act. Through the
administration, states are now allowed to impose work requirements on those who
obtain Medicaid. “They will cut benefits for able-bodied recipients unless they
have a job, are caregivers, or are in school” (Amadeo, 2018). The goal of this
is to affect the single adults who were receiving benefits from the Affordable
Care Act.
On February 20th, President Trump signed an
executive order on healthcare that allows an alternative to Obamacare. There
will be short-term healthcare plans that allow plans for just under a year. “The
new rules stem from an executive order President Donald Trump signed in October
aimed at boosting competition, giving consumers more choices, and lowering
premiums” (Luhby, 2018). This executive order’s goal is basically to provide
more options for people when it comes to health insurance. However, most
short-term plans do not provide free preventative or maternity care,
prescription drugs, or mental health benefits. This is a big problem.
Not only is it wrong that those plans will not cover
maternity care and prescription drugs, but I think that mental illnesses play a
huge role in the dangers of the United States. Almost every month you hear of
some tragedy and usually mental illness is a huge part of that. If plans like
these ever became the only option, what would happen when people are not able
to afford the mental illness treatment that they need? That would only cause
more problems. I don’t understand why some people don’t see a problem with
this. The lower costs might sound good at first, but in the long run the risks
will outweigh the benefits.

I never understood why people were throwing fits about abolishing the Affordable Care Act but now I am understanding a little better. I am still missing a lot of information but as far as prescription drugs this sounds reasonable as to why woman are so unhappy because they may be loosing affordable birth control. I think we need to find the best/ cheapest way to help as many people as possible and if we take away their healthcare, what will we replace it with? I think that President Trump needs to provide an alternative before we completely get rid of the Affordable Care Act.
ReplyDeleteThank You for the much needed information!
Sometimes people do things that they think will make things better, but is really making everything worse. I personally didn't see a problem with Obamacare, until I read your last post that said people are worried that they were assisting others who were using the money they received for things other than healthcare, but overall, Obamacare included great benefits, so it wasn't near as bad as what's going on now; Trump's plan results in the country losing some benefits. Just because it's cheaper, doesn't mean it's a 100% flawless plan. People see that you don't have to pay much money and like the idea, but is it really worth it? Women and those who are suffering from mental illness are being left out on some of the benefits, so I agree with you: "I don't understand why some people don't see a problem with this."
ReplyDeleteRachel,
ReplyDeleteI do agree with the fact that the Affordable Care Act does have it's kinks, but I don't think that it should be taken away completely. People who cannot afford private insurance should have another option. I think instead of Trump deciding to take the ACA away, why not just revise it? That's another thing we could consider. Because those with preexisting conditions definitely deserve the right to affordable quality health care.
I totally agree that it is very dangerous for the Affordable Care Act to be abolished. I understand in a sense that there are benefits that come from having programs that give the consumer more choices, but maternity, mental health, and prescription drugs are costly expenses that people cannot afford to cover on their own. Mental health is a serious issue in the United States. A lot of the violence in the United States is a result of mental illness. More than ever, people, especially young adults are being diagnosed with mental disorders such as anxiety and depression.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand a lot of our President's choices, this included. With the plan he wants to replace obamacare with it will only put our country into a deeper whole as you mentioned in your post. I can only hope this proposal doesn't pass but who knows. I hope our senators and representative look at the proposition and not based a biased opinion on it. Obamacare isn't perfect but trump care is not any better. Great post!

I completely agree with you Rachel about how mental illnesses play a huge role in the dangers of the United States; this post shows that this is another example of how people push mental illnesses to the back burner, because they think it's that serious. I do not think it's right that short term plans do not cover things that are just as important than anything else. I personally feel that the United States has a long way to go when it comes to health care.
